Dodgers win best of 3 series against the Pirates 2 games to 1 for back-to-back championships and 3rd championship in 4 years
Bombers started the scoring early, sending 8 hitters to the dish and plating 3 runs in the first inning, capped by RBI singles from Hargis James and Nick Muller. The second inning brought more of the same. The Bombers again sent 8 hitters to the plate, this time tallying 4 runs, again capped by a Hargis James RBI single. When the dust settled at the end of the inning, the Bombers were up, and they never relinquished the lead. All in all, the Bombers were only kept off the board in the 5th and 7th innings. The final blow was a long homerun by Nick Muller in the 8th inning, ultimately sealing the Hurricanes fate. Kevin Chavez closes the door with a dominating 4 inning save, his second such feat of the playoffs. Final score, Bombers 17 Hurricanes 13.
In the MSBL the Cubs defeated the Colt 45's 8-1 to win the 2018 MSBL Championship.
The Albuquerque Dodgers won the 2018 MABL Championship, sweeping the best 2-out-of-3 series over the Blue Jays, 7-4 and 13-2. Rodney Tafoya (6IP 5H 2R 1ER 3BB 10K) won the first game and Juan Steen providing a 3 inning save. Andrew Pohl (CG, 7H, 2ER, 3BB, 11K) followed by winning the clinching game of the series.
The New Mexico MABL 18+ Championship series, played on 9/25/17, between the 4th seeded White Sox and 3rd seeded Cyclones was very competitive and hard fought by both teams. The Cyclones jumped out to early 5 run leads in both games, but the White Sox had already taken down the 1st seeded Albuquerque Dodgers and 2nd Seeded Giants, so playing from behind again higher seeded teams was nothing new to this crew.
In Game 1, a 5 run 4th by the Sox tied the game up, highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Patrick Gatewood. The Sox ultimately won 17-9, hitting 4 home runs in that game, including a 3 run shot by Denny McClain late to provide insurance runs. Nick Griego was the winning pitcher for the White Sox.
In game 2, the Sox went into the bottom of the 9th down by 2 but were able to scratch a couple across to tie it up. Winning pitcher Kevin Collier won it for the Sox in the 10th on a walk-off single. Collier was named series MVP after going 7 for 9 in the series as well as picking up the win.

On 9/17/17 the Colt 45's of the New Mexico MSBL 30+ reached the top of the 2017 post season tourney. With Jerry Macias throwing a complete, 9 strike out, 6 hit, game, the 45's defeated one of their main rivals, the Hurricanes, managed by Wayne Sprague. It was a very tight game throughout. Rodney Tafoya of the Hurricanes struck out 10 in the loss. It was a great pitched game from both sides. The 45's jumped out to a 4-run lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning, when with 2 outs and 2 strikes, Carlos Ramos hit a bases clearing triple, which was followed by a line drive single by Joseph Zubia. The next big 45's blow was a 2-out home run by Shawn Akins in the bottom of the 5th inning. Final score was 9-5. This season could not have been as successful without the energy, attitude and effort of the entire team listed below.
Tom Adams, Sam Adams, Shawn Akins, Doug Ledbetter, Jerry Macias, Yaimond Montero, Billy Nigh, Vince Overfelt, Chris Reeves, Carlos Ramos, Matt Reeder, Robert Santilli, Eli Springer, Justin Villareal, Sam Wood and Joe Zubia

IN THE MABL: The top-seeded Dodgers, coached by Chris Garcia won their first MABL Championship by completing a two-game sweep of the Reds in a best 2-out-of-3 games series. The Dodgers were making their fourth straight appearance in the final, but had high hopes to not become New Mexico’s version of the Buffalo Bills (1990-1993)! After starting the season 12-0, the Dodgers lost 2 out of 5 games and the league standings started to tighten up between the Dodgers, Yankees and the Cyclones. Seeding was determined in the final weeks of the season and the dark horse Reds captured the 4-seed. Player-Manager Bryan Thomason’s Big Red Machine had a solid run through the playoffs knocking out two early season favorites in the Yankees and Giants, to make the championship series. The first game of the series saw Andrew Pohl earn the win after limiting the Reds to one run in a solid pitching performance on the way to a 7-1 Dodgers victory. Dylan Montano took the loss, but kept the Dodgers off balance early in the game and it was only because of timely, late inning hitting that the Dodgers earned a series edge.
In the second game Daniel Gonzales out-dueled Asael Cruz, but turned over the reins to Daniel Candelas who picked up the win. The game saw multiple lead changes and seemingly momentum-shifting, back -to-back homeruns by Gonzales and Garcia could not hold up against the aggressive Reds, who were trying to earn a weekend split and push the series to a decisive game 3. Patrick Gatewood answered back with a homerun of his own, but in the end the Dodgers were able to ride the solid hitting of catcher Andrew Tuttle (5-9, 3R in the two games) to the title with a 9-6 game 2 win.
IN THE MSBL: The second-seeded Pirates, coached by Derek Marrujo and David Valdez, pulled out a 7-3 win over the top-seeded Colt 45’s to win the 2016 MSBL Championship. Both teams played a brutal schedule to start the season and faced a number of MABL teams that made deep runs in the junior circuit playoffs. After an 11-8 regular season that came down to the final week to determine playoff seeding, the Pirates completed the playoffs at 4-0 and were able to defeat the top-seed twice over the course of 2 weeks. In the final, Rich Morrison hit a 3-run homerun to support winning pitcher, Bryan Deshayes. For the 45’s, Tom Adams took the loss.
Top Story: The Hurricanes come out of the loser's bracket, take two from the Colt 45's to 3-peat in the NM Men's Senior Baseball League. The unlikely run saw the Colts put the Canes in the loser's bracket earlier in the tournament, but blow out wins over the DC Diablos and Bombers, followed by a walk-off win over the Yankees, put the Canes back in the championships. They would require 2 wins over the Colts as they were facing the winner's bracket champs, but a strong performance in game 1 (12-2 win), followed by a squeaker (6-5 win) had the Hurricanes hoisting the trophy for the 3rd consecutive year.
Player’s Feedback after the game:
Frankie Martinez: “Hats off to the Colt 45's for a hard fought championship day of baseball. We lost to these guys early in the playoffs and had to come out of the losers bracket and win 2 games today. Behind two great pitching performances from Rodney Tafoya (pitched game 1) and Rob Torres (pitched game 2), solid defense and of course timely hitting. We won both games to become the NM MSBL CHAMPIONS for the third year in a row. That's a 3-peat. We hustle, grind, and have each other's back. Thats Hurricane baseball. Why do we do this as adults? FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME.”
Chris Baca: “So we did it, two hard fought games and now we're back to back to back state champions! Great job to all my Hurricane teammates and we'll see you all next year! P.s.thanks to all the wives that let us play this game for half the year every Sunday. Appreciate it!”
IN THE MABL: The top seeded Cyclones and second seeded Dodgers split their series to force a decisive Game 3, won by the Cyclones.
In the first game Andrew Pohl threw a complete game and the Dodgers survived a lat inning rally to pull out the win 7-6. The Dodgers led 5-1 for a good part of the game, but the Cyclones tied the game at 5-5 in the 8th. The Dodgers scored 2 in the top of the 9th to go up, but the Cyclones worked quickly in the bottom of the 9th.Jeff Lucero had an RBI scoring hit that brought them to within one, but the next batter hit a shot right back up the middle which Pohl snared and doubled off the runner to preserve the win.
The second game saw an eerily similarly, yet reversed, storyline. The Cyclones went up early, with a commanding 5-0 lead. The Dodgers strung together a few runs but entered the ninth inning 5-3. Pohl scored from 1st base on a Josh Robles double to bring them to within 5-4, but the Dodgers would fall short in their comeback as pitching for the Cyclones shut the door with two quick outs.
The decisive third game saw a pitcher's duel and some defensive work from both teams. The Cyclones won the game 4-3.
